FIRE's mission is to defend and sustain the individual rights of all Americans to free speech and free thought. Originally founded in 1999 as the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education to protect rights on college campuses, FIRE expanded in 2022 to defend free expression for all Americans in courtrooms, on campuses, and in culture.
